Excitement is in the air as former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly gears up to be selected as the unanimous choice for the post of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president. Undoubtedly one of the most celebrated sports-star of our country, Ganguly is known for his honesty, integrity and upfront attitude.
Over the years, there have been a number of incidents where our beloved Dada has won our heart with his sharp wit and bold words.
Here are 6 incidents that prove Ganguly is simply the best!
1. His ‘friendly banter’ with Nasser Hussain
From on-field rivalry to off-field trolling, Sourav Ganguly and Nasser Hussain have come a long way! Fans and cricket lovers thoroughly admire their extremely entertaining commentary box banter!
Here is an example:
Dada’s love for football is no secret. So when Hussain used this topic decided to pull Ganguly’s leg, he was in for some epic come-back!
Here is how the conversation went
Hussain: When can I see India in the FIFA World Cup?
Ganguly: If India had played football for 50 years, then we would have qualified for the finals at least once.
2. Dada and Ravi Shastri
Anybody who possesses even a little interest in cricket must be aware that Sourav Ganguly and Ravi Shastri don’t exactly share a very amicable relationship.
During a commentary stint back in 2012, Ganguly and Shastri were having a discussion about the state associations naming cricket stands after players. The ensuing conversation sure left Shastri speechless.
Ravi Shastri: “In Eden Gardens, Kolkata, is there a Ganguly pavilion or Ganguly stand?”
Sourav Ganguly: “The ground belongs to Ganguly!”
And the cold war continues….
During a media briefing held recently, Dada was asked: “Have you spoken with Ravi Shastri?”
To this, he replied (with a chuckle) “Why? What has he done now?”
3. The infamous tiff with Greg Chappell
Who can forget the infamous Greg Chappell controversy!
During an interview, journalist Rajdeep Sardesai asked Dada whether he thought Greg Chappell owed an apology to Indian cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Dravid.
Ganguly made no efforts to mince his words and replied “He can call up Tendulkar or Dravid. But he dares not dial my number. If he is hearing this on TV, he dares not call Sourav Ganguly.”
4. An explosive autobiography?!
Sourav Ganguly ruled over the world of cricket for quite some years. Surely, he must have a lot of stories to share. And mind you, the ace cricketer is in no mood to hold back.
This one time, a fan asked Dada whether he was writing his autobiography to which he said “When I do it, it’ll create tremors, large ones. I’m just waiting.”
5. He stands up for his team
Back in 2001, when Australia was on a tour in India, Ganguly deliberately reached late for a toss and made Steve Waugh wait. He later revealed that he did this to get back at Australian coach John Buchanan who had been rude to Javagal Srinath during one of the matches.
6. His ‘jersey swinging’ stint
That match…that moment…has been engraved in the memory of every Indian cricket fan forever.
The incident was brought up by Geoffrey Boycott during a commentary session and Ganguly was ready with an apt reply.
This is how the conversation went:
Boycott: “You must mention your experience about taking your jersey off and flying it in the air at the Mecca of Cricket: Lord’s! Oh, you naughty boy!”
Ganguly: “One of your boys also took off his jersey here in Mumbai.”
Boycott: “Yeah, but Lord’s is the Mecca of cricket.”
Ganguly: “Lord’s is your Mecca, and Wankhede is ours!”
We wish Dada all the best for his next endeavor!
