Banerjee was born in Mumbai and spent his formative years in Kolkata. He is an alumnus of Presidency College (Kolkata) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi). In the year 1988, he was awarded a PhD in Economics at the esteemed Harvard University.
