‘Alcohol consumption is not good for your health,’ we must have come across this statement hundreds of times. However, it seems like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has something different to say.
The animal rights organization says that ‘beer is healthier for you than milk.’ Now, drinking a glass or two of milk daily is a norm in most Indian households. Since ages, we have been told that it is extremely beneficial for our health.
PETA gave an official statement, which said, “It’s official: Beer is better for you than milk. Studies show that beer can strengthen bones and extend life, while milk is linked to obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Drink responsibly: Don’t drink milk.”
This may come as a surprise for people. The basis on which PETA has made this claim is a research report by Harvard School of Public Health. This is a part of PETA’s efforts to promote veganism. Although, it needs to be mentioned that the claim is rather conflicting.
Is beer actually good for you?
The point which needs to be discussed is ‘is beer, an alcoholic beverage, better than milk?’ Since it is made from cereal grains such as wheat, malted barley, rice and maize, this beverage promises to consist of essential nutrients. Also, beer is 90 percent water and includes several nutrients such as soluble fiber, iron, and calcium. Moreover, it is an antioxidant!
The benefits of beer
Coming to its health benefits, beer can help in boosting bone health. Dietary silicon present in beer is vital for the growth and health of bones as well as connective tissues.
On the other hand, milk has been associated with an array of health problems including diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and even cancer. It is also linked with other conditions like mucus, acne, along with symptoms of lactose intolerance.
Milk comes with several benefits
Milk is considered to be the healthiest drink around the world and is widely consumed for its benefits. It aids in the overall development and is considered to be good for people of all age groups. Milk boasts of several nutrients.
Whether milk is good or bad for your health is rather debatable. However, one thing is for sure…excess of anything is bad.
The better beverage
Milk is believed to be linked with heart diseases. As milk contains saturated fatty acids, lactose, and cholesterol, milk is also believed to be linked with atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.
Beer, on the other hand, raises the good cholesterol in your body and also shields from the damage caused by bad cholesterol. It stops the blood from clotting…this can be good as well as bad for your health.
Beer may be loaded with health benefits but it is still an alcoholic beverage. This claim by PETA is contradictory and may encourage alcohol consumption, which is not good for people. Remember, anything in access will eventually hamper your health.
