Indian American Abhijit Banerjee and his spouse Esther Duflo recently won the Nobel Prize for Economics. This makes them the sixth couple to receive the prestigious award, since its inception in 1895. Here are the super couples who prove that no goal is unattainable if you have the right person by your side!

1. Marie Curie and Pierre Curie

Marie Curie and Pierre Curie

In the year 1903, this duo received the Nobel Prize in Physics, which it shared with Henri Becquerel.

According to the citation from the Nobel Committee, the Curies received the honor “in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel.”

2. Irène Joliot Curie and Frédéric Joliot

Like mother like daughter!  Irene Joliot Curie (Marie Curie’s eldest daughter) and her husband Frédéric Joliot won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in the year 1935. The couple was conferred with the honor for the discovery of artificial radioactivity.

In the year 2014, May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser were confered with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (jointly with John O’Keefe) for discovering cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain. The term ‘inner GPS’ was coined by them.

5. Gunnar Myrdal and Alva Myrdal

Unlike the other couples, Gunnar and Alva won the Nobel Prize in two different disciplines. While Gunnard Myrdal was awarded the prize in Economics Sciences (with Friedrich Hayek) in 1974, Alva Myrdal received the Nobel Peace Prize (along with Alfonso Garcia Robles) in 1982. Gunnar’s work on interrelations between the economic, social and political process and Alva’s work on countering nuclear proliferation added them to the esteemed list of Nobel Laureates.

The latest addition to the list, Economist couple Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo recently received the Nobel Memorial Prize for Economic Sciences. They shared the award with Michael Kremer. The winners were rewarded for their ‘experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.’
