Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Gully Boy is loosely based on the lives of rappers Naezy and Divine. It’s the story of an aspiring rapper, Murad (Ranveer Singh), who hails from the slums of Mumbai and eventually conquers the underground rap scene. The main cast also includes Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin, and Siddhant Chaturvedi.
An Indian film is yet to win an Oscar. The only Indian movies which have been able to get a place in the top 5 are Mother India (1958), Salaam Bombay (1989) and Lagaan (2001).
The makers and cast of the film, as well as the fans, were thrilled when it was announced that Gully Boy will represent India in the 92nd Academy Awards.
