Everybody knows that B-town parties are synonymous with drugs and alcohol.
Recently an Instagram video posted by Karan Johar went viral. Take a look:
Although not very clear, it seemed like a number of Bollywood biggies were doing drugs at that party.
Comments and criticism began to pour in.
MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa blamed the celebrities for “flaunting their drugged culture.”
Here is a tweet by Sirsa:
He even penned down an open letter:
But this was not the first time this issue had come to surface. Substance abuse is a common problem among members of the film industry and a lot has been spoken about it in the past.
There are a number of Bollywood celebs who have dealt with addiction issues. While some were fairly open about it, others do not like to talk about their problems in public.
Here are 7 celebs who suffered from addiction at some point in their careers.
1. Ranbir Kapoor
The star has opened up about his alcoholism in the past. During an interview with a leading daily, Ranbir admitted to smoking weed when he was in film school. He also said that he smoked it again while he was filming the movie Rockstar. “I used it again during Rockstar. This time as an acting tool. It was hard to get in the moment on stage with 300 bored junior artistes posing as a real audience. Pot made those moments feel real,” Ranbir said.
2. Sanjay Dutt
He was one of the first Bollywood stars to admit that he was addicted to drugs. The actor was arrested for possession of drugs back in 1982. It was after this incident that Sanjay’s father Sunil Dutt sent him to rehab. During an old interview with a media portal, the star said, “ I didn’t leave drugs because of my family. I left because I wanted to be out of it. I didn’t want that life.”
3. Yo Yo Honey Singh
This sensational rap star became immensely popular for his catchy party songs. However, his drug addiction led to his downfall. Speaking about his struggles, the singer said “The last 18 months were the darkest phase of my life, and I wasn’t in a state to talk to anyone. I know there were rumours that I was in rehab (for drug overdose), but I was in my Noida house throughout. The truth is I was suffering from bipolar disorder. It went on for 18 months, during which I changed four doctors, the medication wasn’t working on me and crazy things were happening,’ he said, pausing, but determined to reveal more. ‘I must confess that I was bipolar and an alcoholic, which aggravated the condition.”
4. Pooja Bhatt
Pooja spoke about her struggle with alcoholism during an interview with a leading daily. She told how it was a text from her father that urged her to rethink the way she was leading her life. Pooja said, “Alcohol is comforting, it colours your evening. It’s a socially accepted narcotic even at business lunches and in the boardroom. Also, living in a fast-paced city, being in a high-stress profession, it becomes a reason to celebrate and cope with failure. Your film is a hit, you bathe in champagne, it flops, a single malt lessens the pain. I was 45 and if I wanted to give myself 10 years of living, I had to quit now before I drank myself to the grave. I had to reclaim the sharper, brighter me which had got watered down,” Pooja said. Pooja is now on the path to recovery!
5. Manisha Koirala
Manisha fought ovarian cancer and won. In her book titled Healed: How Cancer Gave Me a New Life, she has written about her battle with the deadly disease. At one point in her career, Manisha was suffering from alcoholism. Speaking about the issue, she said “In life, be it relationships or alcohol, we need to be the master of the situation and not the victim. My friends and family drink, my father drinks sometimes, so there’s no taboo as such. But you need to know your limits so that you don’t flip and start going on a downhill journey. It could happen because of anything- some people get into it due to pressure while others hit the bottle because of a heartbreak. It’s high emotion and drama-packed life. Creative people are more emotionally charged so I am a super sensitive person. But the reason I’ve written about it is that it goes out there and also it’s a sort of closure for me- that this happened with me, the chapter has ended and now we move on.”
6. Prateik Babbar
In the year 2017, Prateik came out sober after spending some time at rehab. In an interview with a leading daily, the actor revealed that he got involved with drugs when he was only 13. Earlier he experimented with marijuana and hashish but later he was addicted to acid and cocaine. Prateik said “My first real drug was a disturbed childhood. Constantly faced with an internal dilemma, the voices in my head debating where I belong and who I am, drugs came disguised as a glitzy escape.
7. Fardeen Khan
Back in 2001, the actor was arrested for possession of drugs. The case was eventually closed in the year 2012. Speaking to a leading daily, Fardeen said, The idea of any addiction is very damaging. People have all kinds of weird addiction, even shopping. My only addiction (now) is the love of my family. They’re my life-supporting system. Please educate yourself vis-a-vis the consequences of whatever you are experimenting with. Addiction is not cool.”
